I pressed the power button and waited for a response. When none came, I began to shout:“Epson! Come on!”Nothing happened and my anger grew. This stupid machine had been giving me problems since I got it last week, so much so that it had even caused me no end of trouble during a big print job. Its inefficiency was enough to drive any sane person insane, never mind one who needed this printer in order to survive. But nothing seemed to work — the computer would not accept anything from the printer; not network settings or driver installations; not even failsafe mode — all of which were hopelessly locked up with the computer memory full and access denied. My printer was an SX130 model. It was a tiny, nimble little thing, barely the size of a shoe box. But I had heard bad things about it even before it came into my possession. Apparently, its reputation for being temperamental had earned it the nickname of Epson “Suicide” model SX130 among other jokes, though few jokes ever made it into the public domain. The official name was Epson Stylus Photo RX130 and that usually appeared on the front cover or at least on its packaging box.I shouldn’t have believed them anyway, shouldn’t have let bad rumours stop me from buying this model of printer earlier. It was a good printer; even though it had its problems, it could still do the job very well. Most importantly, it was the most economical model on the market, and I didn’t have much to spend anyway.I kept thinking these thoughts as I sat at my desk staring at my computer screen with the date and time flashing on and off. With a sigh of frustration, I leaned back in my chair and stared at the ceiling for a few moments, then all of a sudden my mind seemed to be filled with ideas. The only thing the whole morning had come up with was a way out of this deadlock. Maybe it was crazy but I had to try it.I got up and walked over to the printer, almost touching the power button as I did so, and then turned it on… and then turned it back off again. Then, just as quickly, I got up again and got out a piece of paper from one of my drawers where I kept all my spare parts manuals for printers. I decided that before I did anything else, I’d have to get hold of a piece of paper and print out the Service Mode Resetter. Then I decided to do something else while waiting for the printer to shut down properly. Once it shut down, I plugged the computer into the same outlet as my printer and switched it back on. I then leaned forward in my chair and inserted Subtractor 1 into my computer at Port 10 with the small pin facing upward, then with both thumbs pressed onto its top and bottom control buttons respectively. Like most things nowadays in life, this was all very well in theory but when it came to practice it was a little more complicated.
